All calls to the original 0300 number will be redirected to the new HMRC coronavirus helpline at 0800 024 1222.
Opening hours for the helpline will be 8am to 4pm Monday to Friday only.
The change of number will allow HMRC to upscale the helpline, but as with all UK organisations, the tax authority is facing the impact of staff falling ill with covid-19.
According to an HMRC spokesperson: ‘We’ve changed the number because that means we will have extra capacity. The old number will automatically be redirected.’
The recorded message on HMRC’s helpline states: ‘Our telephone lines are operating on reduced opening hours – we are open until 4pm Monday to Friday only while we have fewer advisers available due to the coronavirus and measures put in place to deal with it.
‘You will have to wait longer than normal to speak to us.’
HMRC recommends using digital services and accessing information via business’ tax accounts.
