If you have become an employer for the first time after 1 October 2017 your auto enrolment duties for your new staff will start straight away. These duties apply from the first day your first member of staff starts working for you and is known as your duties start date.
As soon as your new member of staff begins employment you will need to:
You should have the above in place before your employee’s first pay date.
Be aware that even if your employee dose not earn the current threshold of £833 a month or £113 a week, you are required to formally write to them and if they ask to be put into a scheme, it is your duty to set it up for them and complete the Declaration of Compliance.
Both HMRC and the Pensions regulator recommend that employers use payroll software that supports the process of auto enrolment. As Basic PAYE tools will not cater for your auto enrolment duties, you may wish to outsource this task to a payroll bureau to save you time and provide reassurance.
